Kitchen Damage Repair in Brian Head, Utah

A mountain cabin kitchen with a large hole through the wall — patched, drywalled, textured, painted, and finished with knotty pine wainscoting.

The damage was significant — a large section of drywall had been blown out above the wainscoting, exposing studs, insulation, and live wiring. Viking was called in to make it right: new drywall, proper framing, texture matched to the existing wall, fresh paint, and rebuilt knotty pine wainscoting to match the cabin's character. The kitchen came back looking like nothing had ever happened.

THE PROPERTY

A mountain cabin that deserved to be treated right

Brian Head sits at nearly 10,000 feet in the mountains of Iron County, Utah — a world away from the desert heat of St. George. The property is a classic mountain cabin: cedar siding, a covered porch, firewood stacked by the door, and the kind of quiet that makes you want to stay a while.

The interior matched that character — knotty pine wainscoting, warm wood tones, a sage green upper wall, and hardwood floors. When the kitchen wall took significant damage, the repair had to match the cabin's existing feel. A generic drywall patch and a coat of paint wasn't going to cut it.

Viking was brought in to do the job properly — not just close the hole, but restore the wall so it looked like it had never been touched.

BEFORE

The damage was not a small patch job

The hole in the kitchen wall was large — a ragged opening that extended from above the wainscoting cap up toward the ceiling, exposing the wall cavity, insulation, framing studs, and live electrical wiring. It wasn't the kind of damage you cover with a patch kit and some spackle.

The wainscoting below the damage also had a cutout where an outlet or access panel had been removed, leaving raw wood and exposed hardware. The entire wall section needed to be addressed — not just the drywall above, but the trim, the wainscoting, and the electrical boxes.

The challenge wasn't just the repair itself — it was matching the existing wall texture, paint color, and knotty pine character so the finished result looked original to the cabin.

What Viking found on arrival

  • • Large hole through drywall — exposed studs and insulation
  • • Live wiring visible inside the wall cavity
  • • Cutout in knotty pine wainscoting below the damage
  • • Outlet box exposed and unfinished
  • • Texture and paint match required across the full repair area
THE WORK

Putting the wall back together

The repair was done in stages — framing, drywall, texture, paint, and then the wainscoting rebuild. Each step had to be done right before the next one could start.

Framing & Drywall

The damaged section was cut back to clean framing, new backing was installed where needed, and fresh drywall was hung and taped. The patch was feathered out to blend with the existing wall surface.

Texture & Paint Match

The existing wall had a medium-heavy skip trowel texture. Viking matched it by hand — a step that requires patience and a good eye. The sage green paint was matched and applied to the full repair area so the color transition is invisible.

Wainscoting & Finish Work

The knotty pine wainscoting was rebuilt to match the existing boards — same profile, same spacing, same cap detail. Outlet boxes were properly finished and cover plates reinstalled. The wall was left clean, complete, and consistent with the rest of the cabin.
