Tile & Flooring

The old tile had to go. The new tile had to be right.

The homeowner had outdated tile throughout the main living areas — hallway, laundry room, and both bathrooms. It wasn't just cosmetic. The tile was cracked in places, the grout was stained, and the overall look made the home feel older than it was.

Viking demoed all of it — chiseling out the old tile, cleaning the subfloor, and prepping each surface properly before any new material went down. The new tile is a wood-look plank format in a warm gray tone that runs consistently through every room, making the whole floor plan feel connected and larger.

The work was done in phases to keep the home livable throughout the project. Dust containment, daily cleanup, and careful sequencing meant the homeowner wasn't living in a construction zone any longer than necessary.

Approach

Down to subfloor, properly prepped

Phase 1 · Demo

Demo done right starts with the right tools.

Tile demo is loud, dusty, and physically demanding — but the prep work before the first tile gets set is what determines how well the finished floor lasts. Viking used a rotary hammer and vacuum system to chisel out the old tile cleanly, keeping dust contained and protecting the surrounding surfaces.

Every room was fully cleared, the subfloor inspected for soft spots or high points, and the surface properly cleaned before any new material was staged. No shortcuts on the prep — that's what makes the installation hold up.

Phase 2 · Installation

Layout planned. Thinset mixed. Tile set.

The wood-look plank tile was laid in a staggered offset pattern to mimic real hardwood flooring. Tile spacers and blue tape kept the layout consistent across rooms so the grout lines align through doorways and transitions. The mortar was mixed and applied in manageable sections to ensure proper coverage under each tile.

All cuts were made in the garage work station — a dedicated tile saw setup that kept the mess out of the living areas. Each cut piece was cleaned and dry-fit before being set permanently.
