A clean, low-maintenance backyard patch — gravel out, lush green turf in, custom-cut to fit a curved retaining wall border.
The homeowner had a small backyard area surrounded by a curved decorative retaining wall — gravel on the ground, not much else. The goal was simple: give the dog a clean, soft spot to go potty without the mess of loose rock. Viking removed the gravel, installed a weed barrier, and laid premium artificial turf cut precisely to follow the organic curves of the existing border. The result looks like it was always there.

The backyard had a nicely landscaped feel — curved retaining wall borders, desert plants, potted flowers, a covered patio. But the main open area was just decomposed granite. Functional, maybe. But not comfortable, not clean, and not great for a dog.
Every time the dog went out, gravel tracked back inside. Rain turned the area muddy. The homeowner wanted something soft, green, and easy to rinse off — without tearing up the existing landscaping they'd already invested in.
The curved retaining wall border made a standard roll-and-cut approach impractical. The turf had to follow the organic shape of the existing border precisely — no gaps, no bunching, no visible seams at the edges.

Three angles of the yard before work began — gravel and decomposed granite throughout
A turf install looks simple from the outside. The prep work underneath is what determines whether it still looks good in five years.
First step: get the gravel out. The decomposed granite was shoveled, wheelbarrowed, and hauled off the property entirely. No burying it under the turf — that causes drainage problems and uneven settling. The area was excavated down to clean soil before anything else happened.

The gravel was loaded into the trailer and hauled away clean. The homeowner's driveway and surrounding landscaping were protected throughout the process. No mess left behind, no gravel scattered across the patio.

Once the area was excavated, the base was compacted with a plate compactor. This step is what keeps the turf flat and stable over time. Skip it and you get soft spots, wrinkles, and edges that lift. The compactor runs the full area before any weed barrier or turf goes down.

A commercial-grade weed barrier was installed across the compacted base, then the turf was rolled out and positioned. This is where the job starts to look like something — the green goes in, the shape starts to take form.

The turf was cut to follow the organic curves of the existing retaining wall border. This is the part that takes the most patience — measuring, cutting, trimming, fitting. The crew trimmed the seams by hand to get a clean, tight edge along every curve.

The homeowner got exactly what they asked for: a clean, low-maintenance green patch that fits the existing landscaping and gives the dog a proper place to go.

No watering, no mowing, no dead patches in the Southern Utah heat. It looks the same in July as it does in January.
Soft underfoot, drains well, and rinses clean with a hose. No more gravel tracking into the house.
Cut to follow the existing retaining wall curves exactly. The finished edge is clean and intentional — not an afterthought.
A few things worth understanding before you start shopping for quotes.
A turf install that looks great on day one but develops bumps, wrinkles, or weed growth by year two almost always traces back to a rushed prep. Proper grading, compaction, and weed barrier are not optional — they're what you're paying for.
Most turf comes in straight rolls. If your yard has organic curves, retaining wall borders, or irregular shapes, the turf has to be cut to fit on-site. This takes time and skill. Anyone quoting a flat rate without seeing the shape of your space is guessing.
Pile height, blade shape, infill type, and drainage rate all affect how the turf looks, feels, and holds up over time. In Southern Utah's heat, UV resistance matters too. We'll help you choose the right product for your specific use case.
This wasn't a massive backyard renovation. It was a small patch for a dog. But the homeowner still deserved a clean edge, a proper weed barrier, and a result that looked intentional. Size doesn't change the standard.
