The Problem
Pool pumps, filters, and heaters are expensive equipment. In Washington County, where summer temperatures regularly hit 110°F, leaving that equipment exposed to direct sun shortens its lifespan, causes seals to degrade faster, and makes routine maintenance miserable. The homeowner had a new pool installed and wanted the equipment side of the house to look finished — not like an afterthought.
The challenge wasn't just shade. The structure had to be anchored properly without cracking or undermining the existing concrete equipment pad. It had to allow full access to every piece of equipment for maintenance. And it had to look like it belonged — clean lines, quality materials, hardware that matched the modern exterior of the home.
A tarp or a prefab shade sail wasn't going to cut it. The homeowner wanted something built.
The Plan
Viking designed a cedar pergola with a clean open-beam top — enough shade to protect the equipment from direct sun without trapping heat underneath. The open slat design allows airflow, which matters for the HVAC units flanking the pool equipment.
Posts were set with heavy-duty black powder-coated steel post bases anchored directly into the concrete pad. This keeps the wood off the ground, prevents moisture wicking, and gives the structure a clean, modern look that matches the home's black window trim and roofline.
The beam-to-post connections use matching black steel brackets — the same hardware language throughout. Nothing was left to look improvised.

The Work

Step 1 — Layout & Ledger
Before any post went in the ground, the ledger board position was marked and leveled against the house wall. This is the reference point the entire structure is built from — if it's off, every beam and post is off. Getting it right at this stage takes a few extra minutes and saves a lot of headaches later.
The pool equipment and HVAC units were already in place, which meant working around live equipment in a tight space. The crew mapped out post locations to maintain full clearance to every service panel and connection point.

Step 2 — Post Installation & Framing
The cedar posts were set into the black powder-coated steel post bases anchored to the concrete pad. Using surface-mount bases rather than burying the posts keeps the wood off the concrete and dramatically extends the life of the structure in a climate with wide temperature swings and occasional moisture.
The main beams were cut, prepped, and assembled on sawhorses before being lifted into position — a cleaner approach than trying to cut and fit in place with equipment in the way.

Step 3 — Hardware & Connections
The black powder-coated steel hardware — post bases, beam brackets, and connection plates — was chosen to match the home's black window frames and roofline trim. This is the kind of detail that makes a structure look designed rather than just built.
Every connection point is structural, not decorative. The hardware is rated for outdoor exposure and won't rust or degrade in the Utah climate. The cedar will weather naturally over time to a silver-gray that looks equally good against the white stucco exterior.
The Finished Result
The pergola covers the full pool equipment pad — pump, filter, heater, and manifold — while leaving the HVAC units on either side accessible and unobstructed. The open-slat top provides meaningful shade without trapping heat, which matters for both the equipment and for anyone doing maintenance on a 105-degree day.
From the yard, the side of the house now looks like a finished outdoor space rather than a mechanical area. The cedar and black steel read as intentional design decisions — not an afterthought. It's the kind of project that doesn't get noticed by guests, which is exactly the point.

Over time it transitions from the warm honey tone of new cedar to a silver-gray that looks equally good against stucco.
