Project Snapshot

This project was a full shed build from the ground up — not a kit assembly. Viking Solutions handled every phase: site excavation, concrete pier footings, floor framing, wall framing, roof framing, OSB sheathing, tile roofing, stucco exterior finish, door and window installation, and interior shelving.

The finished structure matches the home's exterior — same stucco color, same dark tile roof, same black trim. It looks like it was always there.

The Starting Point

A backyard with no dedicated storage — and Southern Utah soil that doesn't give up easily.

The homeowner needed a real storage structure — not a plastic shed from the hardware store. They wanted something that would hold up in the St. George heat, look like it belonged on the property, and give them organized, usable space for tools, equipment, and supplies.

The challenge was the site itself. The backyard had black gravel landscaping and rocky Utah soil underneath — the kind of ground that requires proper excavation and concrete pier footings before any framing can begin. Skipping that step would mean a structure that shifts and settles over time. Viking didn't skip it.

The Work

Three phases of construction — from bare ground to a finished structure.

Phase 1

Site Excavation & Pier Footings

Before any framing could begin, the site needed proper preparation. Viking brought in a Bobcat E20 mini excavator to remove the gravel and break through the rocky soil. Concrete pier tubes were set and filled to create a solid, level foundation. This is the work that homeowners never see — but it's what makes the structure last.

Phase 2

Floor Frame & Wall Framing

With the footings cured, the crew laid the pressure-treated floor frame directly on the piers. From there, wall framing went up quickly — all four walls, properly braced and squared. The open frame stage is where you can see the full footprint and get a sense of what the finished structure will look like.

Phase 3

Roof Framing & Sheathing

The roof was framed with a slight pitch to match the main house's roofline and allow for proper drainage. OSB sheathing went on the walls and roof deck. At this stage, the structure is weathertight enough to start interior work while the exterior finishes are applied.

The Finished Result

A structure that looks like it was designed with the house — not added as an afterthought.

Organized Storage

L-shaped shelving on two walls gives the homeowner dedicated space for tools, supplies, and equipment — all off the floor and easy to access.

Built to Last

Concrete pier footings, pressure-treated framing, OSB sheathing, stucco exterior, and tile roofing. This structure is built for Southern Utah weather.

Matches the Home

Same stucco color, same dark tile roof, same trim style. The shed looks like it was part of the original build — not an addition.

What Homeowners Can Learn From This Project

A few things worth knowing before starting a shed or small outbuilding project in Southern Utah.

1

Site prep is where the project is won or lost.

In Southern Utah, the ground is rocky and unforgiving. Skipping proper excavation and concrete footings might save time upfront, but it leads to a structure that shifts, settles, and eventually fails. The work people never see is often the most important work on the job.

2

A shed built like a house lasts like a house.

There's a significant difference between a kit shed and a stick-built structure. Stick-built means real framing, real sheathing, real roofing, and real footings. It costs more to do it right — but the result is a structure that holds its shape, handles the weather, and adds real value to the property.

3

Matching the home's exterior is worth the extra effort.

A shed that looks like a shed is a shed. A shed that matches the home's stucco, roofline, and trim style becomes part of the property. That attention to detail is what separates a project that looks finished from one that looks added on.

4

Interior function matters as much as exterior appearance.

A beautiful exterior doesn't help if the inside is just empty floor space. Planning the interior shelving layout before framing is complete means the structure can be built to support it properly — not retrofitted after the fact.

Common Questions

About shed builds and small outbuilding projects in Southern Utah.

Yes. Viking builds custom sheds, storage structures, and small outbuildings throughout St. George, Washington, Hurricane, Santa Clara, Ivins, and surrounding Washington County communities. We handle the full build — from excavation and footings through framing, roofing, exterior finish, and interior work.

A kit shed is a pre-manufactured structure assembled from panels. A stick-built shed is framed from scratch using dimensional lumber, just like a house. Stick-built sheds are more durable, more customizable, and can be built to match your home's exterior. They also handle Southern Utah's heat, wind, and occasional freeze cycles much better than most kit options.

Permit requirements depend on the size and location of the structure. Washington County and the City of St. George both have specific rules about accessory structures, setbacks, and square footage thresholds. Viking recommends checking with your local building department before starting any shed project. We can help you understand what's typically required.

A project like this one — full excavation, concrete footings, framing, roofing, stucco, and interior finish — typically takes several weeks from start to finish, depending on weather, material lead times, and site conditions. We'll give you a realistic timeline during the estimate process.

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Matching the stucco color, roofing material, trim style, and door type makes the structure look like it was always part of the property. It also tends to hold its value better than a structure that looks like an add-on.

In addition to sheds, Viking builds casitas, detached garages, outdoor kitchens, covered patios, pergolas, decks, and other small structures. If you have a project in mind, reach out and we'll let you know if it's in our scope.
